This collection consists of personal correspondence, background and research materials relating to Dr. Smith's books, articles, histories, and miscellaneous items. The correspondence is primarily between Dr. Smith and his wife, Carol Kander Smith who was also a physician, and spans the years 1943-1954. The letters written during the war years later became the foundation sources for his book on Dachau.

Marcus J. Smith was an author and radiologist in Santa Fe, New Mexico. During World War II he served as a physician with the U.S. Army in Europe. He was a member of the team of Allied physicians responsible for the care of the survivors of the Dachau concentration camp following its liberation by the U.S. Army in 1945.
